Freefall. Discussion Live avec l'artiste Erik Nieminen

Freefall (chute libre). Comme un pas dans un abîme, la communauté mondiale est récemment entrée dans une période de chute libre relative, où les anciennes réponses n'apportent que peu de solutions et où de nouvelles architectures doivent être construites. Avec l'apparition d'un nouveau cadre de vie, séparé des autres en raison d'une pandémie, nous nous interrogeons sur nos rôles dans la société.
Lorsque ces rôles sont supprimés ou du moins mis de côté, un sentiment de déconnexion se développe. La connexion est une question d'empathie, d'ouverture aux autres. Les peintures sont des objets empathiques qui émergent de l'isolement du studio dans notre monde pour combler le fossé entre notre réalité banale et nos pensées. Bien que les créatures de mes peintures puissent sembler isolées, elles sont en fait une porte d'entrée pour le spectateur dans leur monde. Elles sont un appel à rester en contact avec un esprit humaniste, dans le présent ou à tout moment.
À propos de l’artiste
Erik Nieminen est un artiste finno-canadien né en 1985. Il a obtenu un BFA à l'Université d'Ottawa en 2007 et un MFA à l'Université Concordia de Montréal en 2010. Il a exposé en Europe et en Amérique du Nord, notamment lors de récentes expositions individuelles à Londres, Montréal et New York. Il a reçu de nombreux prix, dont la bourse Elizabeth Greenshields, et est devenu en 2018 le grand gagnant de la Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series. Il vit et travaille actuellement à Montréal.

Freefall. Like stepping into an abyss, the global community has recently entered into a period of relative freefall, where old answers provide few solutions and new architectures have to be constructed. With the onset of a new framework for living daily life, separated from others due to a pandemic, we question our roles in society – the roles given to us by others or ones that we have crafted for ourselves in order to lend a sense of meaning and urgency to our reality.
When these roles are removed or at least sidelined, a sense of disconnect develops. At its core, connection is about empathy, about reaching out to others on a singular one-to-one level. Paintings are empathetic objects that emerge from the isolation of the studio into our world to bridge the gap between our commonplace reality and our thoughts. Though the creatures in my paintings may seem isolated, they are actually a gateway for the viewer to enter into their world. They are an appeal to stay connected to a humanist spirit, in this or any time.
About the artist
Erik Nieminen is Finnish-Canadian artist born in 1985. He achieved a BFA from the University of Ottawa in 2007 and an MFA from Concordia University in Montreal in 2010. He has exhibited in both Europe and North America, including recent solo shows in London, Montreal, and New York City. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant and in 2018 became the Grand Prize Winner for the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series. He currently lives and works in Montreal.
