In this video, artist Mark Igloliorte teaches how to spray paint skateboards with Indigenous words as a way for him, and others, to connect with their heritage.

About the artist

Mark Igloliorte is an interdisciplinary artist who was born in 1977 in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. He grew up in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador, and currently resides in Vancouver, BC. Igloliorte received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in Halifax, and a Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. Igloliorte has exhibited extensively over the last decade, participating in group and solo shows throughout the country, as well as multiple artist residencies and teaching positions. Igloliorte has also been involved in youth art workshops through The National Aboriginal Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy, and was named a Labrador Inuit Role Model by the Nunatsiavut Government in 2007. He is a professor at Emily Carr University in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Igloliorte’s work is on view at The Rooms as part of “Of Myths and Mountains,” which runs until September 27th.  His exhibition “Traverse” was scheduled for this summer at the Labrador Interpretation Centre, but has been rescheduled to next summer due to travel restrictions.
