THIS SHORT DOCUMENTARY FILM IS PART OF THE EXHIBITION 리듬풍경 ׀ RHYTHMSCAPE, CURRENTLY INSTALLED AT THE OTTAWA ART GALLERY (OAG). ORIGINATING IN SOUTH KOREA, THE EXHIBITION FEATURES A VARIETY OF CONTEMPORARY ARTISTIC STRATEGIES THAT MEASURE THE PULSE OF LIFE, SOCIETY AND WORK.

The exhibition opened on March 12, just prior to the OAG’s temporary closure due to COVID19. OAG is pleased to preview some of its digital content online before re-opening, beginning with this work by Chicago-based, Canadian artist Brendan Fernandes.  

Brendan Fernandes’ Clean Labor (2017) was a site-specific performance that drew attention to the invisible hands that prepare hotel rooms for guests and focused on the role of the body in such a physically demanding profession. During the performance, while the hotel room attendant went through their regular motions to clean the room, they were paired with a dancer who enacted complimentary gestures of physical exertion. Dancers were encouraged to improvise movements related to their own understanding of the experience. As most room attendants are immigrants to North America with undervalued skills, Brendan Fernandes drew them into the choreography of the movements. During the performance, dancers gently requested – indicated by a hand-on-shoulder – that the staff should pause in their work. These pauses created moments of reflection for the staff, dancers and audience to understand the meticulous actions necessary to achieve a clean, safe and liveable space.

RhythmScape is presented in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of South Korea to Canada, the Korean Cultural Centre Canada, through the support of the Korean Foundation for International Culture Exchange.

Ce court documentaire fait partie de l’exposition 리듬풍경 ׀ Rythmesthétique, présentée à la Galerie d’Art d'Ottawa (GAO). Originaire de la Corée du Sud, l’exposition présente des œuvres qui, à l’aide d’une panoplie de stratégies artistiques contemporaines, prennent le pouls de la vie, de la société et du travail.

L’exposition a été inaugurée le 12 mars 2020, juste avant la fermeture temporaire de la GAO due à la COVID-19. La GAO est heureuse de pouvoir présenter de sa programmation en ligne, avant sa réouverture, en commençant par le travail de Brendan Fernandes, un artiste canadien, qui travail et vit à Chicago.

Cette performance in situ de Brendan Fernandes attire l’attention sur le travail invisible effectué pour préparer des chambres d’hôtel et met l’accent sur le rôle du corps dans cette profession physique. Lors de cette performance, les membres du personnel de ménage exécutent leurs tâches de nettoyage habituelles tandis que des danseurs expriment des gestes complémentaires qui soulignent l’effort physique requis pour chaque tâche. Les danseurs avaient comme consigne d’improviser des mouvements liés à leur propre compréhension de l’expérience. Puisque le personnel de chambre en Amérique du Nord est majoritairement immigrant et que ses compétences sont souvent sous-estimées, Brendan Fernandes l’invite à participer à la chorégraphie des mouvements. Pendant la performance, les danseurs pouvaient leur demander de s’arrêter brièvement en posant délicatement une main sur leur épaule. Ces arrêts créent des moments de réflexion permettant au personnel de l’hôtel, aux danseurs et aux spectateurs de comprendre les actions méticuleuses nécessaires pour garantir un espace propre, sûr et habitable.
